Scholarships & Awards

The ASCT Foundation was established in 1998 by the ASCT to advance the educational goals of our members and honor individuals who have made exceptional contributions to the field of cytotechnology and the ASCT. Through the generosity of tax-deductible donations, the Foundation proudly supports prestigious awards, including:

  • The Marion and Nelson Holmquist Cytotechnologist Achievement Award
  • The Allen Achievement in Writing Award
  • The Warren R. Lang Memorial Student Presentation Awards

The ASCT Foundation remains dedicated to preserving the legacy of our founders, whose passion and commitment laid the foundation of our organization. By fostering the Foundation’s growth, we continue to support and elevate the cytotechnology profession, ensuring its advancement for generations to come.

Holmquist Cytotechnologist Achievement Award

Instituted in 1990, the Marion and Nelson Holmquist Award for outstanding Cytotechnologist is named in honor of two longtime supporters of cytotechnologists and their work. Marion Danos Holmquist, a cytotechnologist, was the first president of the American Society for Cytotechnology. She and her husband, pathologist Nelson Holmquist, have encouraged ASCT’s mission of improving the profession of cytotechnology. Since the early nineties, the Holmquist Award has been presented to a cytotechnologist who has, in turn, made his or her own significant contribution to ASCT and to the field of cytotechnology.

Nominations are now being accepted for the prestigious Marion and Nelson Holmquist Cytotechnologist Achievement Award. The objective of this award is to recognize a cytotechnologist for his/her contributions to the field of diagnostic cytology. Emphasis will be on the nominee’s more recent contributions. Any cytotechnologist who is a member in good standing of the ASCT is eligible to be nominated. The following criteria are used to evaluate nominees: Clinical skills (as documented by references); professional involvement; teaching/research activities; honors/awards in Cytotechnology and commitment/dedication to Cytotechnology.

Warren R. Lang Student Award

Among the most eagerly anticipated honors presented by the ASCT are the awards for student case presentations at our Annual Conference. Established in 1989 by the ASCT Executive Council in memory of Dr. Warren R. Lang, the Warren R. Lang Award was originally awarded to a single graduate of an accredited School of Cytotechnology.

Dr. Lang was a distinguished professor of Cytotechnology and Medical Director of the School of Cytotechnology at Thomas Jefferson University's College of Allied Health Sciences in the 1970s. In 1983, he became Chair of the Department of Pathology. Renowned for his unwavering advocacy for cytotechnologists, cytology students, and pathology residents, Dr. Lang was passionate about teaching and deeply supportive of the ASCT's formation. He believed it was not only a cytotechnologist’s right but also their responsibility to shape their profession actively.

Today, students presenting cases at the Annual Conference are eligible for this prestigious award. The first-place winner receives $150 and a one-year membership to the ASCT, while second- and third-place winners receive $100 and $50, respectively.

To learn more about this award and see the winners, visit the Student Forum web page.

We are proud to celebrate the ten students who represented Cytotechnology Programs nationwide and competed in the Interesting Case Presentation Competition at the 2024 ASCT Annual Meeting in San Diego, CA.

ASCT Student Interesting Virtual Case Presentation Contest

2024 saw the return of the ASCT Student Interesting Virtual Case Presentation Contest in which cytology students submitted narrated presentations of their interesting cases. These presentations were assessed by the ASCT Education Committee, and among the 12 submissions, two presentations were awarded identical winning scores.

Jacey Yan was a student of the UCLA Department of Pathology, School of Cytology. Her interesting case, titled "Cytomorphological Features of Liver Angiosarcoma" involved a 70-year-old male liver transplant patient presenting with multiple hepatic hemangiomas. Fine needle aspiration cytology was applied showing an additional finding of a malignant neoplasm, eventually diagnosed as an angiosarcoma.

Charliann Friedman was a student of the Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, Cytotechnology and Molecular Cytology. Her interesting case, titled "Metastatic Carcinoma to the Iliac Bone" involved a 64-year-old female patient with a history of ductal carcinoma. Fine needle aspiration of the iliac bone was collected, and cytology and concurrent immunohistochemical staining confirmed metastatic ductal carcinoma to the bone.

Both cases provided in-depth educational value showcasing the importance of cytology in primary diagnosis and corresponding ancillary testing. Both winners will have their presentations showcased on the ASCT website and receive free membership to the ASCT for the following year. Congratulations to both of our winners this year, as well as all the impressive submissions received for this event!

Bob Gay Cytotechnology Scholarship

Following the establishment of The Bob Gay Lecture Series in 2012, the Bob Gay family decided to sponsor a Student Scholarship to be awarded annually to cytotechnology students who have demonstrated academic excellence and the potential to make contributions to the cytology profession.

This scholarship was established by Kim Kowalczik in memory of her father, Bob Gay, who made significant contributions to the education of cytotechnology students and was a founding member of the ASCT. Beginning 2018, the scholarship has been awarded to two cytotechnology students annually. Two outstanding students this year will receive $1,250 and sponsorship (travel and accommodations) to the upcoming  ASCT annual conference.

Candidates must have completed the first six months of training in an accredited cytotechnology program and must be members of the ASCT. The award is based on academic performance, financial need, service and a demonstrated potential to make significant contributions to the cytotechnology profession. Student membership with ASCT is complimentary and is a requirement for the scholarship application.

The recipients of the 2025 scholarship will receive funding from ASCT Services to attend the 2025 ASCT Annual Conference, May 2-3, 2025 in Reno, Nevada where they will receive their award To learn more, visit ASCT Services.
